Lebanon Detects First Case Of MERS Virus 09 may 2014

BEIRUT, May 9 (Bernama) -- Lebanon's Health Ministry said Thursday the first case of MERS coronavirus had been detected in the country, Xinhua news agency reported.

The patient is a Lebanese citizen who had visited several Gulf countries over the past one month.

"The Health Ministry has inspected safety measures taken by the hospital where the patient was treated before he was discharged from hospital," Health Minister Wael Abu Faour said in a statement.

"The ministry is continuing detection operations to make sure that this epidemic does not spread in Lebanon," he said.

MERS has spread from the Gulf countries to northern Africa, southeast Asia and Europe, killing more than a hundred people and infecting a few hundred others.
